Art on Tuesday: Viewing the Moon

harunobu_12

This ukiyo-e was made by Suzuki Harunobu 鈴木 春信 (1725-1770)  in 1767. This woman wears an extraordinary beautiful kimono with flowers on the top kimono, here visible are the long sleeves and a part of the right side. Her under kimono is red with a small white emblem pattern and aubergine contrast colors on the upper half and parts of the second under kimono. She is standing inside of a house, the Japanese doors are wide open, so that she has a full view outside. Behind her is a picture screen, showing a landscape. In the garden stands a cherry tree in bloom and the moon is shining. I like the elegance of the whole scene and the curved lines of the drawing.
