Art on Tuesday: Passing Rain


This lovely picture was painted by Itô Shinsui in 1917. It shows a Japanese woman holding an umbrella against the falling rain, She is wearing a black kimono with a simple pattern and a blue white obi. I like the simplicity of this picture.

    • The Chicago Institute of Art has a substantial collection of Ito’s work. There are some lovely renderings of women and landscapes in it. In my opinion, the ones done in the 1910’s are particularly nice: they capture the flavor of the masters from the 18th and 19th centuries.
