Art on Tuesday: October – Autumn Tints

NakayamaThis ukiyo-e was made by Nakayama Shuko (b. 1876) around 1920. It is one of his so-called  Shin ukiyo-e bijin awase, which is a collection of woodblock prints in a new style showing beautiful women. The title is October: Autumn Tints.

This picture is very charming showing a Japanese woman contemplating. It shows a soft-focus effect on the face and hair-line. Her hair-dressing and clothes are in full color. The leaves belong to a  maple tree. Orange maple leaves are a typical symbol of  the Japanese autumn.
