Art on Tuesday: Fishing on the Sumida River

harunobu02

This ukiyo e was made by Suzuki Harunobu 鈴木 春信 (1725 – 1770). It is from the series Eight Fashionable Views of Edo, today’s Tôkyô. The Japanese girl in the white kimono is fishing with a bamboo stick. The other girl in the black and red kimono with a pine trees pattern is just relaxing. The black wooden box contains a set of utensils for tobacco smoking. In the background there is another Japanese boat and the scenery shows some rice fields.
