Art on Tuesday: Heron Maiden

heronmaidenFor today’s post I chose a picture of a Japanese woman dressed in a festival costume with an extraordinary nice headgear, painted by Kitagawa Utamarô 喜多川 歌麿 (1753 – 1806). It is an ukiyo e of his series An Array of Dancing Girls of the Present Day.

The girl wears a hat with cherry blossoms and a peony on top, a kimono with a flowing water pattern and flower emblems. She is holding a fan in each hand.
