Here is a beautiful ukiyo-e of Kitagawa Fujimarô (1790-1850), a painter who was inspired by the well-known ukiyo-e master Utamarô. Only few bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women) made by him are known today.
Look at the snow, it seems as the two beauties are walking on clouds. The composure of the picture is very skilled. Kitagawa uses much space showing the snowfall as a lovely scattered pattern. Almost abstract. The movements are well-designed and build up a certain tension. You can feel how the women both struggle with the wind and the snow, but somehow are being safe. Kitagawa’s drawings are perfect and come with many detailed elements, show rich colors and various patterns of the kimonos.
