Art on Tuesday: Eisen Keisai

eisen_keisai

The Courtesan Hitomoto of the Daimonjiya House by the famous Japanese artist Eisen Keisai 渓斎英泉 (1791-1848) from the series Contemporary Scenes in the Pleasure Quarters. Woodblock printing (ukiyo-e). What I like about this picture is its rich kimono pattern and the shadows on the shôji, the doors with paper screens. You can see women sitting in the room behind it playing an instrument.
