Art on Tuesday: Chobunsai Eishi

Chobunsai Eishi (1756-1827) or Hosoda Eishi was an ukiyo-e artist of the samurai class, which was special, because the other woodblock-artists were mainly from the merchant class. He worked formerly for the shôgun.
His series of beautiful women is praised overall Japan. This picture is a homage to Kisen Hoshi from a series of “Six Immortal Poets” (1793-94). It is showing a beautiful woman posing as the well-known Japanese poet Kisen Hoshi.
